Babies change everything – including how we use and interact with our space! Figuring out how your home can support you during a big life transition can make that transition feel much smoother.

This couple came to us while expecting their first child. For this apartment renovation in Jersey City, our clients’ renovation goals included transforming a second bedroom into a functional nursery and creating organization systems as their family grew and changed.

In the nursery, we created custom built-ins, including a closet, to provide a home for everything. By adding spaces to organize and store all the gear that babies need (and dramatically increasing the amount of stuff in their apartment), we were able to help this couple create a peaceful space to welcome their bundle of joy.

We also created a new bedroom wall and doorway so that the mom-to-be could access her walk-in closet without entering the nursery. Painting the room and adding special lighting were the finishing touches.

Throughout the rest of the apartment, we created beautiful, functional storage systems in the husband’s closet, a new linen closet, and the coat closet.

And because a perfect closet is beautiful on the inside and the outside, we upgraded the doors to match the style of the apartment, with hand-made custom walnut handles that echo the rough-hewn wooden posts that are part of this loft conversion. As we chose the type of door to use for each closet, we worked hard to strike a balance between creating great access to the internal organizers and maintaining good flow.

We loved this project because despite its smaller scale, we were able to add value by offering the same level of thoughtfulness and attention to detail that’s characteristic of all our work.
